Retro-Fit in GreenInstead of moving or demolishing a 1950’s era home and rebuilding, we helped the homeowner redesign and renovate. It was important to the owner to update with environmental sensitivity and increased energy efficiency. Significant energy savings was achieved by: supplementation of insulation, caulking and sealing, installation of an Energy Star rated water heater, replacing windows with Pella Energy Star rated efficient double-glazed windows with argon gas filler and low-E film. Structurally sound siding and brick were not removed, but built over which reduced demolition cost and waste that otherwise would have been deposited in a land fill. It increased the insulation value of the exterior walls and also served to retain thermal mass within the walls . The extension of various eaves and rebuilding of the sunroom were achieved using Institute of Sustainable Forestry (ISF) certified lumber. Low or no-VOC paints were used for most coatings. Pre-painted corrosion-resistant aluminum was customized to form a combined fascia/gutter system that added smooth lines and longevity for these components. Sustainable metamorphosis accomplished. |
