Build it Green

As the design+builder, we faced many budgetary limitations with this new project. Yet, we were able to incorporate a variety of sustainable attributes while keeping a more traditional architectural style.

Exterior Tyvex moisture control house-wrap with a veneer of authentic reproduction hand-crafted brick and Hardi-Plank cement-based siding were chosen to increase durability, thermal mass, fire protection and decrease maintenance costs and insect infestation. Jeld-Wen double hung pre-painted aluminum cladded “AuraLast” wood double paned windows with dual glazing, argon-filled with low-E film and contoured grids between the glass for easier cleaning were the cost-effective choice. Insulated doors and garage doors, and a generous insulation and caulking package increased its overall energy efficiency.

Interior elements were based within an open design to maximize ventilation and natural lighting. Most wood products were from Institute of Sustainable Forestry (ISF) certified lumber with low or No-VOC coatings for most wall and other finishes. Mechanical systems included Energy Star rated Bryant 92% efficient dual fuel systems with eco-friendly Puron. A corrosion resistant Pex plumbing system with greater freeze/thaw tolerance, fewer joints for less leaks and quieter and faster hot water supply, was installed.

Landscape clearing was minimized and the new plantings chosen are indigenous to the area. Sustainable upgrades on a classic design.
